While announcing initiatives to promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence in climate action, Türkiye’s COP31 Presidency launched a global pledge to increase electricity’s share of final energy consumption to 35% by 2035.

COP31 President and Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Murat Kurum outlined Türkiye’s priorities for the UN climate summit in Antalya on September 22 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. He also took a new step by announcing the “35 by 35 Global Electrification Pledge.”
The “35 by 35” pledge encourages countries to use clean energy sources, develop storage solutions, and modernize their grids. President Kurum also announced the Antalya Pledge on Artificial Intelligence—which will address the rising energy consumption of data centers and aim to leverage artificial intelligence for climate action—and the AI for Clean Technologies Initiative.

The Antalya Pledge on Artificial Intelligence is being developed in collaboration with the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU). According to a statement from the COP31 Presidency, the draft text will be shared prior to COP31.

In a statement ahead of the launch, Kurum said: “A warming world, a global energy system in disarray, and growing concerns about the rise of artificial intelligence all call for action. COP31 will rise to the occasion. We must openly discuss the increasing energy consumption of artificial intelligence. It is time for governments to start setting rules. We expect companies to be transparent about their energy use and to power their operations with clean energy. Beyond data centers, we must electrify energy consumption in every aspect of our lives—from buildings to transportation and industry—in line with our 35 by 35 goal. The momentum behind our action agenda is growing, and COP31 will be a critical moment to focus the world’s attention and energy on these critical priorities,” he said.
